Add purposes to contacts

This article explains which default mailing consents are used to exclude records from a mailing.

Written by Cristiana Ghinea

Following the introduction of GDPR, charities are required to request consent to contact before they can make fundraising requests.

This doesn't include day-to-day admin or transactional mailings, such as direct debit information, but it does include fundraising approaches and promotion of goods services.

Add purposes to contacts

Before you proceed, follow the steps in our article on managing communication purposes to create the purpose.

Once you've created the purposes, follow the steps below:

  1. Click CRM, then click Contacts.

  2. Click the contact.

  3. Click the Contact Preferences tab.

  4. In the Purposes sublist, click + Add.

  5. Select an option from the drop-down for each communication method.

  6. Select the purposes these methods and consents are for.

  7. Click Save.

How purposes interact with mailings

When creating a mailing, you need to select a purpose. These are the same purposes that are set against contacts.

When contacts are loaded into the mailing, they can only be contacted through this mailing if they have the matching purpose with a consent of 'Granted', 'Assumed', 'Contractual', or 'Opt-In Not Required'.

Any contacts that are 'Denied', 'Not Requested', or missing the purpose are marked as 'Do Not Contact' for this mailing.
